Vincent T. H. CHU is renounced internationally as walking encyclopedia of civil engineering. He is the recipient of the Ombudsman’s Award 2007 under complaint-related category and Young Engineer of the Year Award 2008 (Merit) organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. The followings are the major achievements of Vincent Chu over the past few years:

(I) Extreme Popularity of Engineering Books on International Scale
Vincent T. H. CHUVincent Chu is the author of five internationally popular civil engineering books, namely “200 Questions and Answers on Practical Civil Engineering Work” , “Civil Engineering Practical Notes A-Z”, “Ask Vincent Chu (Common FAQ on Practical Civil Engineering Works)”, “The Underlying Reasons in Practical Civil Engineering Works” and “A Closer Look at Prevailing Civil Engineering Practice – What, Why and How” which entail a list of useful practical experience, Q&As and knowledge that engineers should acquire. The five books were written within 5 years (2005-2009) and they obtained overwhelming good comments from engineers around the world. They are the “must-read” engineering books of a civil engineer.

Overwhelmed by easy-to-read style, the wide spectrum of engineering knowledge and very useful information contained in the books, about 30 engineering societies, universities and organizations around the world offered to post the books on their websites for their member’s reference. About 20 engineering societies, universities and organizations around the world offered to recommend the books to their members. Up to date, the book is known to have spread to Asia (Hong Kong, Japan, Turkey, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Malaysia), Europe (United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, Bulgaria, Spain, Slovakia, Gospodarska Zbornica Slovenije), North America (The United States and Canada), Oceana (Australia and New Zealand) and Africa (South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Zimbabwe), Islands (Mauritius, Barbados).

(II) Frequent Writing of Regular Engineering Columns in Journals and Websites Around the World
Vincent Chu wrote engineering columns in journals and international websites on regular basis. As some engineers may be too busy to read his books which are quite time-consuming to read it through, Vincent Chu actively liaised with the engineering organizations to write some short engineering columns to share his knowledge and experience with engineers around the world as follows:

Organization Engineering Column
The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers The Civil FAQ (Updated Monthly) in the monthly journal The Hong Kong Engineer
World Federation of Engineering Organizations The Civil Q&A (Updated Monthly)in the official website
The University of Science and Technology (American Society of Civil Engineers – International Student Group) The Civil Corner (Updated Monthly)in the official website
World Council of Civil Engineers Civil Engineering FAQ

(III) Establishment of Free Engineering Email Service
Vincent Chu established a free engineering FAQ email service “Ask Vincent Chu” in which all civil engineers all over the world could raise their engineering problems encountered through email and he will respond to them shortly. World Federation of Engineering Organizations and European Council of Civil Engineers helped to promote this free email service. This essentially provides a systematic means in addressing their needs on real time basis and to help them out in their day-to-day engineering works.

Moreover Vincent Chu has voluntarily wished to be part of Ask an Expert section of this website where he answers all the queries as soon as possible.

    HI ,
I did my Masters thesis in Construction sequence and would like to do more research in that field. I would like to know the case studies of few buildings which collapse during construction because of not taking cosideration of effect of construction sequence in their deigns.

In my thesis i did on 20 storied building with 3 bay lengs of 4,6 &8m span square shape. I vary stages of loading (Wall load in staad model) and stages of construction (slab loads in staad model) through out 20 story i found many columns are failed if we r not taking construction sequence .

I am just in need of few example buildings which collapse during construction bcz of above reason.
