Test To Check Consistency Of Cement

CONSISTENCY
The basic aim is to find out the water content required to produce a cement paste of standard consistency as specified by the IS: 4031 (Part 4) – 1988. The principle is that standard consistency of cement is that consistency at which the Vicat plunger penetrates to a point 5-7mm from the bottom of Vicat mould.
Apparatus – Vicat apparatus conforming to IS: 5513 – 1976, Balance, whose permissible variation at a load of 1000g should be +1.0g, Gauging trowel conforming to IS: 10086 – 1982.

Procedure to determine consistency of cement
i) Weigh approximately 400g of cement and mix it with a weighed quantity of water. The time of gauging should be between 3 to 5 minutes.

ii) Fill the Vicat mould with paste and level it with a trowel.

iii) Lower the plunger gently till it touches the cement surface.

iv) Release the plunger allowing it to sink into the paste.

v) Note the reading on the gauge.

vi) Repeat the above procedure taking fresh samples of cement and different quantities of water until the reading on the gauge is 5 to 7mm.

Reporting of Results
Express the amount of water as a percentage of the weight of dry cement to the first place of decimal.

Hi,will you please provide the BIS Code tables detail for concrete mix. Thanks. Bunni

Md. Abdullah-Al-Mamun says:

Hi, Can I get a test result sheet, which help me to know how to represent a result. Also ASTM method.

ravi hosamani says:

hello..
sir
thank u lat

RAVI HOSAMANI says:

THANK U SIR

shruthi says:

can i plz get info y only .8%water is used check the consistency of cement?

shamsher alam says:

what is the physical significance of normal consistency of cement?

SKR says:

we need specific amount of water that gives us a standard paste we could use for testing, so the need of Normal Consistency Cement Paste existed.

james m says:

Hi sir .
can i kindly know how the consistency is constant.

RRaghu says:

hello sir/madam,
why only 400gms of cement is taken for the consistancy test and why not more or less?

Nalini says:

Bcoz the vicat apparatus has a mould whose volume can fill by 400gm.

cheng says:

in ASTM C187 Mix 650g of cement with a measured quantity of water following the procedure prescribed in the procedure for mixing pastes of ASTM C305.

M.Naveen kumar says:

Hi sir,

THANK U SIR!!

Abiodun says:

Does this consistency check procedure also applies to rapid hardening portland cement?

cheng says:

in ASTM standard C187 Normal consistency of cement we need to measure 650g of cement..the water shall conform to the numerical limits of D1193 for type III or Type IV grade of reagent water….rapid hardening is based on ASTM C191 Time setting of cement using vicat apparatus

from book CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY wrtten by M.S. Shetty. publication by S.Chand
penetration in standard consistancy test is given 33-35 mm. and here u give value 5-7mm . so clear my confusion.

admin says:

That value would be from top, here the value is from bottom. Total height of apparatus = 40mm

cheng says:

in ASTM 191 Penetration of 25mm

kymil says:

gud day!
can you please provide discussions about consistency of standard cement paste..
thanks…

karena says:

gud nite!!!!!can you give me conclusion n more discussion about consistency of standard cement paste????

mand says:

1. what are the other alternative equipment that can be used in determining the normal consistency of Cement?
2. pls provide ASTM standard for normal consistency and also standards for different design mixture of concrete.
Tnx!

kuljeet says:

what would be the percautions required for the test?

cheng says:

all the apparatus shall be free from vibration during the penetration test. take care to keep the 1mm needle staright, and the needle must be kept clean as the collection of cement on the sides of the needle may retard the penetration. the time setting is affected not only by the percentage and the temperature of the water used and the amount of kneading the paste received, but also by the temp. and humidity of the air, and its determination is therefore only approximate.

kDhruv says:

hi
Please provied the procedure of all testing of cement opc 43 grade

sakthivel says:

please give the detail of physical properties and testing of cement

Ankita says:

what is the formula used to calculate actual water to be used for makin cube to check compressive strength after calculating the consistency?

cheng says:

in compressive strength see ASTM C109….

jayakumar.b says:

test for cement

prabhu says:

actually we take sample quantity of cement takem 450 g as per the Bs Standard why you are says here only 400 g
