Workability of Fresh Concrete by Compacting Factor Test

COMPACTING FACTOR

Compacting factor of fresh concrete is done to determine the workability of fresh concrete by compacting factor test as per IS: 1199 – 1959. The apparatus used is Compacting factor apparatus.

Procedure to determine workability of fresh concrete by compacting factor test.

i) The sample of concrete is placed in the upper hopper up to the brim.
ii) The trap-door is opened so that the concrete falls into the lower hopper.
iii) The trap-door of the lower hopper is opened and the concrete is allowed to fall into the cylinder.
iv) The excess concrete remaining above the top level of the cylinder is then cut off with the help of plane blades.
v) The concrete in the cylinder is weighed. This is known as weight of partially compacted concrete.
vi) The cylinder is filled with a fresh sample of concrete and vibrated to obtain full compaction. The concrete in the cylinder is weighed again. This weight is known as the weight of fully compacted concrete.

Compacting factor = (Weight of partially compacted concrete)/(Weight of fully compacted concrete)

    slump test and compaction factor test are used to determine the workability of concrete but cf is the ratio of partially compacted concrete to fully compacted concrete

    compaction factor test is very important to get information regarding the workability of concrete. If the concrete is dense it is less workable and that density depends upon shape and size of aggregates. compaction factor lets us to know whether concrete is dense or not and hense workable or not///////

    It is important to state that the lower the compacting factor, the lower the workability of the concrete and vice versa. Without this interpretation of the test, your procedure above is incomplete.

    SLUMP TEST not only reflects workability but cohessive property of the mix can also be simultaneously evaluated
    if performing the test takes place with correct degree of precision required, (in true slump only),thereby ensuring correct Water cement ratio.

    i just using this method to check the worability of concrete … i found that almost all the result is 0.97. What is it means? The testing are tested to specimen from G40 Tremie 2, G50 Tremie 1 and G40 Normal Mix…

    compacting factor test-is a test that are used to determine the workability of a concrete.(for you to know how a concrete can work then it takes the test of compacting factor test.
    whiles slump test-is to determine the consistency of a green concrete.

    workability requirements for concrete in different structural components may be defined as
    the ease with which it can be placed without compromise in the strength parameters and
    compaction factor test cannot be a correct procedure adopted for evaluating workabiliy.
    The matrix representing workability can have cf as one of its elements.
