Cable stayed bridge

    For these sorts of bridges, there are hundreds of cables to support the deck. In general, if one of these cables gets damaged, the bridge shuts down for maintanence(in my country). The question is that if few cables are disconnected or damaged, isnt the bridge still safe? is it totally necessary to shut down the bridge to cause traffic jam in nearby areas?

    If a single cable supports like 500 tonnes, diving this into the remaning cables shouldnt be too much for the remaining cables to take that extra load, or am I wrong?
