Ask An Expert

Is structure engineering troubling you?
Do you face problems in solving even the basic problems?

If yes then look no further as engineeringcivil.com along with Er. Gobind Khurana and Er. Abhimanyu has taken an initiative to help civil engineering students in structure related queries. We are thankful to Er. Gobind Khurana, Er. Abhimanyu and Vincent T. H. CHU for being a volunteer in helping other engineers in solving problems related to structure design in R.C.C and Steel.

Dear Sir,
I want to know the factor of safety for load combination (DL+LL) what will be taken
1.5 or 1 for foundation design.

factor of safety for steel is 1.15 and for concrete is 1.5

i was doing a numerical on block shear failure. a 350 kN load is applied on the section. when solving for both LRFD and ASD, the values came out to be like this

484 kN for LRFd and 323 kN for ASD.

so which value to consider since one is higher and the other lower than 350 kN?

and also will the section fail in block shear and why?

dear sir,
i want to have details for low cost housing.
the details for each house are as below
1] 3 rooms = 1 bedroom + 1 drawing room + 1 kitchen = 1 toilet.
each room size will be 12×15 ft except kitchen and toilet [indian style]
what will be the cheapest possible cost for such a block of 3 rooms.
may i add that these rooms will be not standalone, these will be in a
cluster of about 30-40 houses.
i want to use cement hollow bricks.
what will be the cost if tiles are added and if not added just plain
flooring and walls.
pls be kind enough to send me necessary details for the above in my
thanks and regards

hello sir..since many days i am designing mix for m 60 grade concrete…the target mean strength is 72Mpa…using ramco opc 53G and ultra tech 53G cement..the prportions are..
cement 450Kg/cum and micro silica 30kg/cum
W/c ratio 0.3 water absorption
sp gra of aggre type I(20mm) 2.777 0.84
sp gra of aggre type I(20mm) 2.644 1.94
sp gra of fine aggre 2.61 1.5
will you please suggest me a design for the same so as to achieve strength of 72Mpa at the end of 28 days..even using pure OPC i.e..excluding micro silica will also do good…

Good Day
I will be grateful if you could let me know,
1)Bare minimum information required for soils to be used for highway construction.
2)How would the soils be classified based on Atterbergs limits.
3)Compare ASTM vs BS for sieves.

Will be grateful if these can be provided at the earliest, any sites that can be reffered too.

is there a norm for the lateral load capacity of piles based on their vertical load. have been hearing it is something like 5-10% max, our consultant has come up with number which are almost 25%.
